November 2020: Being Thankful

I pray that you’ve found your light shining in dark places and hope is being found in new ways. Even if that new way is in you. This month, we are focusing on gratitude. Let’s put some gratitude in our attitudes and be thankful for all that the Lord has done and is doing in our lives.

**Note: You do not, unless you so desire, have to respond to this letter**

November: Being Thankful

Monthly Focus: Giving Thanks to God

Key Verses: Philippians 4:6; Psalm 107:1

Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:18

18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Thanksgiving- The expression of gratitude, especially to God.

Gratitude – The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

All month long people around our nation are focusing on what they’re thankful for. It’s the time of the year where people are reflecting on the goodness of the Lord and His hand of blessing, protection, and favor in our lives.

‘Yeah, but what about me? My life isn’t perfect, and things aren’t going the way I want them to. My life looks nothing like I imagined, and I want things to be way better. Way different.’

You, my friend, have prime opportunity to be thankful. Because you’ve clearly identified everything your world isn’t and now you’ve made plenty space to be grateful for what it is. Are you alive? Did you eat today? Does your body still breath in and out without you having to think on it, or using machine assistance? Do your eyelids still blink in harmony for the protection of your eyes? Somebody somewhere gave you a skill no one can take from you; the ability to read! Is that the only one? What else are you blessed with?

Use the space below and list what you’re blessed with. Nothing is too small or too insignificant. The blessings of the Lord are abundant and can be found with the grateful eye. If you’re struggling with this section, keep reading and come back when you finish.

Listen. There are SO many ways that you can be grateful. Most times it takes a little creativity and taking your focus off everything you don’t have at the moment. Perhaps you don’t have everything that you desire, and your life doesn’t look exactly the way you want it but look around you. What DO you have? You are blessed beyond measure and I can guarantee you that we can find someone, somewhere who has it worse than you and would consider it an honor and a blessing to be in your place.

If you haven’t already completed your list above, go ahead and do so. If you have, take time to think on it and add 1 thing each day that you’re grateful for. Continuing in a position of gratitude and thanksgiving will make your days lighter and your spirit stronger. We should always and continue on in giving thanks to God for all that He has done and is doing in our lives.

You may not know what the scriptures have to say about your attitude of gratitude, so I leave you with a few scriptures concerning them. There are plenty! Let this lead the way.

Ephesians 5:20

Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Psalm 100:1-5

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

Colossians 2:6-7

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Psalm 107:8-9

Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

I hope this month’s study of thanksgiving and gratitude help you see your current situation in new light. Our prayer is that it draws you lovingly toward our Savior Jesus Christ. Until next time, know that you’re remaining in our prayers.
